"When I see the utter horror of the trenches- our men, fighting with rats
for their food, being shelled by careless allies, rotting their feet in the
mud; I think... Who is the enemy? If the French or the English are no better
off than the Fatherland, and our men are killed from disease and bad
planning as much as bullets- then who and what are we fighting?
A thousand boys killed over an inch of ground, and what is our patriotism
worth?
I can not stifle my reason with propaganda living this close to the Western Front.
