By Rivka M. Nipper Those of you who know me know about Oneiroi, and have likely helped with its design. I'm sure you're just as excited as I am to see it resurrected. Those of you who aren't familiar with my project won't suffer from nostalgia at seeing it redesigned. Which is probably for the better because oh man- it's changed. I'm proud to say that Oneiroi has undergone some major reconstructive surgery and has come out looking like something I'd like to publish someday. Oneiroi happened to me around the end of 2004 and has haunted me brains ever since. The original concept for Oneiroi was much different from the one featured here. The original comic was done by hand and was one of my first experiments with computer coloring. You can still see it here. Guhbleeehehehe...it's hideous. The term 'Oneiroi' comes from Greek mythology, referring to the personified deities of dreaming including Morpheus, Icelus, Phobetor, and Phantosos. Yes, yes. I know... "Dreaming". "Oneiros". "Morpheus"...it all sounds so familiar doesn't it? However, Neil Gaiman did not invent the name "Oneiros" or even "Morpheus"- there is an entire body of Greek legend that precedes him by a good two-thousand years or so. And while I have read all of Sandman, and I have buckets of respect for all of Gaiman's work and consider myself among the body of his crazed, drooling fangirls, I can assure you that this is NOT a cheap rip off of Sandman and not a single Endless will be making an appearance in my comic. :) There would be no point in reinventing Sandman because Gaiman is too damn ingenious, and if I was going to create anything based around his incredible work, I'd just say so. I couldn't create a shadow of his masterpiece and try and pass it off as my own and be able to live with myself anyway. ^^; But disclaimers aside... Oneiroi was created from a great number of inspirations- Music, history, psychology, plays, experience, movies, books, paintings... so many different sources that I can't begin to list them. This sort of thing is what keeps me humble and reminds me that nothing I do can be COMPLETELY original. Mostly, Oneiroi is an exploration of the human mind, relationships, the significance of dreams and imaginations, my own life, history, ideas, and...well, anything I want, actually. It's a world that can accommodate anything that I can come up with, no matter how random or specialized. Oneiroi takes place in the realm of ideas so if I can think it, it can happen. .....Or rather, it WILL once it gets off the ground and out of the planning stages. As you can see, there's not a lot up here yet. There's a lot going on behind the scenes, but I'm a little sparse when it comes to finished products. (Story of my life... ^^; )
Okay okay sheesh...
Anyway- I realize that it's a bit early to be getting everyone's hopes up for a giant, cool, online comic that will be updated weekly and all that jazz. It ain't gonna happen that way folks! Not for a while! But I promise to keep this site updated with whatever bits and pieces I DO finish and feel comfortable with posting. In other words, hopefully this page won't collect cobwebs any faster than the rest of my poor website. But seriously- this is something that I'm passionate about. There will be ups and downs and stalemates, like anything else, but Oneiroi is my baby, and I plan to see it grow up. :) Meanwhile, I hope you'll come to love this story and the characters as much as I do in time. Remember to keep an eye out for various contests and ways you can help in the design! Updates and information will be posted in the News section of the page, so check back often!
